Our Patron
Saint Athanasius
St. Athanasius—whose steadfast witness inspired the name Contra Mundum—was born in the late 200s in Alexandria, Egypt. He is revered as one of the most important early Church Fathers in both East and West, remembered especially for his courageous defense of the doctrine of the Trinity at a time when heretical interpretations were widespread.
Athanasius is the patron saint of exiles, having been driven into exile at least five times over the course of his ministry. Countless anecdotes from his life highlight his resilience and virtue, making him a fitting patron for those who struggle amid adversity. One story recounts that, when pressured to renounce his beliefs, Athanasius was told, “The world is against you,” to which he replied, “Then I am against the world.” From this bold response he received the title Athanasius Contra Mundum—Athanasius Against the World.
This practice takes both its name and its patronage from his example: for the exiles, for those who feel the world is against them, and for those who desire to pursue virtue even when the weight of the world presses hard against them.
