FAQs

  • Contra Mundum (kon-truh moon-dumm) is Latin for against the world. In this clinic’s practice, it is not necessarily meant as a cry of defiance but more as an adage of solidarity with those who feel as though the whole world is set against them. See the Our Patron section in our About page to learn more about where this name comes from.

  • Contra Mundum Counseling provides actual, licensed psychotherapy from a Catholic perspective. The clinician is licensed with the state of Massachusetts as a mental health counselor, and has all the same training as any secular therapist. Many faith traditions, including the Catholic faith, have important implications and assumptions regarding human nature, and many people in these traditions are interested in receiving mental health care from someone who shares these beliefs and assumptions, especially because of the sensitive and personal nature of psychotherapy.

  • Yes, we are happy to see people of any faith or lack thereof. We do our best to integrate a client’s values and beliefs into therapy; the Catholic faith is just our area of expertise.

  • No, Contra Mundum Counseling does not provide spiritual direction services. However, we integrate your spiritual life as a part of your mental health care. Many clients receive spiritual direction from a priest or deacon elsewhere in addition to receiving psychotherapy here.

  • We do see couples, children, and families, but require a consultation first. These populations frequently seek therapy but do not always benefit from it in the way that they hope, so we work to assess on a case-by-case basis whether Contra Mundum is the right fit for them.

  • We can see clients remotely over the phone or over our HIPAA-compliant telehealth video calling service. We only see individual clients over the age of 18 over video; people under 18 or people engaging in couples or other types of therapy we only see in-person.

  • Currently we can only legally see people who are in Massachusetts at the time of therapy—if you live outside of Massachusetts but drive to our office, we can see you, but we cannot perform teletherapy across state lines.

  • We do take some insurance, but we encourage you to consider out-of-pocket payment for a variety of reasons. Please see our Services page for more information.

  • Unfortunately, we are unable to take supervisees at this time, but we hope to do so in the future.
